Practice(S) Of Meaning

Hugo K. Letiche

Practices of Meaning as a focus for reflection and research in organizational studies has the potential of illuminating three themes: When organization is actually represented either in organizational studies or in the field, it is narratively described. The narratives are interpreted much as in literary criticism. Typically 'original intent', or what the manager entrepreneur or some group wanted to achieve; 'coherence', or how the narrative does or does not hold together; or 'perspectivism'; that is how the organization is variously interpreted or deconstructed; are addressed. The distinction between interpreting fiction and social activity is blurred. The social and participative dimensions to organization are distorted. After all, the effects of meaning in organization are not the same as in fiction.
