A theory of possibility: A constructivistic and conceptualistic account of possible individuals and possible worlds

Rescher, Nicholas

This is an essay in the formal systematization of certain fundamental notions in metaphysics, specifically in the ontology and epistemology of possibility. The framework of its approach to the modus operandi of possibility may be indicated by rehearsing the key names of the chain of the tradition upon which it draws (often without explicit acknowledgment)-Aristotle, the Scholastics, Leibniz, Meinong, McTaggart, and the later Carnap. These writers are linked by a common tendency of metaphysical concern and perspective that no amount of substantive disagreement can altogether remove, a tendency which the present work obtains from theirs.
