General Systems Thinking: Its Scope and Applicability (The North Holland series in general systems research)

Bowler, T.Downing

This book attempts to organize the basic concepts that underlie general systems thinking and to demonstrate their universal scope and applicability. It represents 20 years of teaching, research , and writing in search of an overview consistent with the present state of scientific knowledge. The primary motivation for this work derives from two convictions. First, there is a need for a comprehensive perspective on human beings and their world that would make our fragmented information more readily available for the intelligent conduct of life. Second, common patterns have emerged in the information provided by the specialized sciences that make such an overview possible.
